| 'I'm often amazed at your fortitude' |

Aunty, I am wondering how and where to start... I can probably start by saying that in all the years I have spent under you, I've never told you how much your presence means in my life. I can probably start by saying all of it, now. They say that great masters teach by various means. Sometimes you don't even know you're learning. It's so true in your case, Aunty. To the rest of the world, we are learning the art of Bharatanatyam. But to me and to those who know me, like my family and peers, I am actually learning many practical and profound lessons in life. The first 'extra-curricular' lesson I learnt was 'Organisation' or more correctly, being organized, prepared. Of course, things like insisting on students carrying lots of safety pins and hair pins for dance programmes, making multiple lists and checking days in advance if we have all we need for the programme.. this may sound very commonplace and completely confined to a dance class. But it isn't. In a subtler way, it has taught me to be prepared for everything. So be it a college examination or a first interview, my sister's mammoth wedding or the first birthday party of a dear niece, organisational skills I've learnt from her stand me in good stead. An extension of preparing us students is encouraging us to help Aunty in the dance class. It is a lesson in patience ! From dealing with a score of chattering girls, some who just look at you blankly, others who enjoy the art, from frank display of affections to juvenile tantrums... you see it all, in the adorable juniors. There is one thing, though, that is completely unique to only you, Aunty. The one thing that has always shone through your personality has been your quiet dignity. You've faced every trial and stood up to every challenge in your unique, dignified manner. I have always admired this quality ardently and I'm often amazed at your fortitude. I hope I can emulate it in some small way...
'When one has much to put into them, a day has a hundred pockets.' That more or less sums you up for me, Aunty. And of course, a million pockets would fall short to encompass your knowledge. I can only think of two short words - Thank you !
Love and respects, |
