Mrudula Naveen writes about her maiden US performance

Mrudula Naveen's maiden US performanceWhen Mr. & Mrs. Kameswaran Sivamani asked me to perform on the occasion of Navaratri, I was quite excited and determined to make it a memorable one ! My first performance in the US was my first in many ways. First time doing my own make-up, selecting the items, practicing on my own... luckily, my husband Naveen gave me all the help I needed. When I selected the items, I remembered Rajee Aunty all the time; include songs in praise of different deities, for variety, those that are unique and different to cater to various tastes, songs in different languages that add a special touch.

When I started my practice, I missed Rajee Aunty’s inspirational presence. I remembered the good old days when Aunty would spend hours on my daily practice, correcting, helping, inspiring me. Aunty’s words kept ringing in my ear... Programmes will come all of a sudden, the time for practice will not. Very true. After a break of almost 6 months, it was very difficult to get back into that mode. I had to motivate myself, alone.

Mrudula Naveen's maiden US performanceAnother concern that I had was doing my pinnal (plait) on my own. The elaborate dressing, the head ornaments, the plait itself. God !!! Where is Jaya Aunty? She was the one who would do the pinnal and Jaishree Akka, Saraswathy Akka and others would help. How am I going to manage all on my own ? One day prior to my programme, I tried doing my pinnal with rakodi, false hair, kunjalam. The result was not satisfactory. I had to consult Jaishree Akka and my mother for tips. On the day of the performance, my pinnal came out really well. It took me about 45 minutes to complete it, but I was happy with the outcome. With Aunty’s training and Naveen’s help, I managed.

The time came for me to start the performance and I thought to myself... the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Well, for me the journey began with blessings of great gurus, elders and well-wishers, at a very young age. I was glad I was going to continue my journey. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed getting back onstage. The performance was well received. The audience enjoyed all the songs. It was a great learning experience and I know I would be better prepared the next time. I need to say this "Aunty, I felt your presence all the time, onstage".

I end with a quote from the Bhagwad Gita - Set your heart upon your work, but never on its reward. Work not for a reward; but never cease to do your work.
