Maya learnt the basics of Bharatanatyam, when as a four-year-old, she would sit on the lap of her Guru, watching her mother dance. Both mother and daughter have had the good fortune of learning the art from Guru Rajee, who has been a guiding force in their lives.
In 1993, Maya had the good fortune, as a five-year-old, to perform in her Guru’s dance drama, Mahakavi Bharati, for the National Centre of the Performing Arts, Mumbai. In 1996, she performed in the Chaitanyamai Bharat Mahotsava, a Multilingual Community Performing Arts Festival, presented by Kalnirnay and Nehru Centre, at Nehru Centre Auditorium. She performed her Arangetram in 2002 and since then, has given several performances in Mumbai. In 2008, she perofrmed in Chennai for the Yuva Mahotsav.
Artistically inclined, Maya secured an A-grade in the Maharashtra Board Intermediate Examination in Art, 2001-02. An avid music-lover, she has learnt to play the piano and the guitar. She is an active member of the Chinmaya Yuva Kendra (CHYK), Chinmaya Mission, Mumbai. She is a student of Life Science, at St. Xaviers College, Mumbai. Maya continues her study of Bharatanatyam under Guru Rajee.
